Ear Pain on Curaçao: What to Do During Your Vacation

Ear pain or ear infection Curacao

Ear pain during your vacation on Curaçao is a common medical issue. We regularly see both children and adults with this complaint. In addition to pain, symptoms can include fluid drainage from the ear, itchiness, or difficulty hearing. Therefore, it may be wise to avoid swimming, diving, or flying in some cases.

How the Ear Works

The ear has several parts. From the outside in, these include the external ear canal, the eardrum (tympanic membrane), the middle ear, and finally the inner ear. The middle ear is connected to the nose through the Eustachian tube. This connection plays an important role in pressure regulation.

Causes of ear pain on Curaçao

In many cases, ear pain is caused by an infection. For example, children often suffer from middle ear infections (otitis media). Meanwhile, adults are more likely to have infections in the external ear canal (otitis externa). These infections can be triggered by swimming—especially in pools—or by a nose cold. The latter may cause swelling and blockage of the Eustachian tube.

As a result, pressure builds up behind the eardrum. If the pressure becomes too high, the eardrum may tear, causing fluid to drain from the ear. Fortunately, this usually isn’t dangerous and tends to heal on its own.

Another common cause of ear pain is related to diving. If there is a significant pressure difference between the middle ear and the water, and you’re unable to equalize, the eardrum can perforate. Most perforated eardrums heal naturally within a few weeks. However, diving should be avoided during the healing period.

“Help Doctor, I Have Ear Pain!”

It’s important to have your ear and eardrum checked by a doctor. The correct diagnosis will determine the treatment. Sometimes, no medication is needed. You may simply be advised to stop swimming or diving.

You can always take paracetamol for pain relief. (Note: children should receive the appropriate children’s dosage.)

Can I Still Fly With Ear Pain?

Sometimes not. If you have a severe middle ear infection, flying is not recommended. You may not be able to equalize the pressure in your ears. This can cause severe pain and increase the risk of a ruptured eardrum. In such cases, MedPoint can provide a “Not Fit to Fly” declaration. Once your symptoms improve, we can issue a “Fit to Fly” certificate.

However, if your eardrum has already perforated, you can fly. There will be no pressure build-up in the ear, which means you are unlikely to feel pain during the flight.
