When can I get tested for an STI?
- If you do not have any symptoms, you can get tested two weeks after the last unsafe sex (for chlamydia and gonorrhea).
- If you have symptoms that may be indicative of an STI, you can test immediately. It's important not to have unprotected sex until you get the test results.
- It is wise to regularly undergo STI tests, even without clear symptoms, especially after unprotected/riskful contacts. This is because early detection can prevent the treatment and further spread of STIs.
How can you get tested for an STI?
- Based on the (digital) conversation with the doctor, a plan will be made for testing and/or treatment
- For women, testing is done with a cotton swab in the vagina and/or anus. The doctor can assist if necessary.
- Men can be tested with a cotton swab in the penis or anus or through a urine sample.
- In some cases, a blood test may be necessary (for example, if there is suspicion of HIV).
- Test results usually come in within one week.
