Jellyfish have tentacles covered in stinging cells that release venom when they come into contact with the skin. This can cause pain, redness, swelling, or even blistering. In many cases, jellyfish stings are mild and harmless. However, some tropical species found around Curaçao can cause stronger reactions.
One of the most dangerous species is the Portuguese Man o’ War, which looks like a jellyfish but is actually a colony of organisms. Its tentacles can grow up to 30 meters long and deliver painful, venomous stings.
What to Do if You Get Stung by a Jellyfish
If you experience a jellyfish sting, here’s what you should do right away:
Remove tentacle remains carefully – Check your skin for any tentacles that may still be attached. Do not touch them with your bare hands. Instead, use a towel, stick, or piece of paper.
Apply warm water – Rinse the affected area with warm (not cold) water. Cold water can make the symptoms worse.
Relieve itching – Try not to scratch the area. In some cases, applying vinegar may help reduce the sting.

Most jellyfish stings heal on their own, but in some cases medical attention is necessary. If the pain, redness or rash becomes severe, a doctor can prescribe medication such as tablets or creams to help ease the symptoms. It is also important to seek help if you suspect that the sting came from a Portuguese Man o’ War, as these stings can be much more serious.
You should also be alert for signs of an allergic reaction. Symptoms like shortness of breath, swelling of the face or lips, nausea, vomiting, or intense itching and pain across the body require urgent care. If you experience any of these reactions, do not wait—call an ambulance right away.
