Dengue

Protect Yourself Against Dengue on Curaçao

Dengue (also known as breakbone fever) is common on Curaçao, especially during the rainy season when mosquitoes breed faster. Both children and adults can be affected, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Common symptoms include fever, headache (mainly behind the eyes), muscle ache, joint pain, nausea, and sometimes a rash. Most people recover within a week, but serious cases can occur.

Preventing Dengue:

  • Wear long sleeves and pants
  • Use mosquito repellent with DEET
  • Sleep under a mosquito net
  • Remove standing water around your home (even small amounts can breed mosquitoes)

Vaccination Protection:
A dengue vaccine is available that protects against severe disease. It’s given in two doses, three months apart. At MedPoint, you can get your first or second dose, even if your first dose was administered elsewhere. Vaccination can also be scheduled during the rainy season.

See a Doctor If:
You have fever, headache, severe muscle/joint pain or a rash. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, dehydration occurs, or the fever persists.

Contact MedPoint to see if the dengue vaccine is right for you or to schedule your vaccination.
