Dengue on Curaçao

Protect Yourself Against Dengue on Curaçao

Dengue, also known as breakbone fever, is a mosquito-borne disease that is common in tropical destinations such as Curaçao. The risk of infection increases during the rainy season, when mosquitoes breed more rapidly. Both children and adults can be affected, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe.

Recognizing Dengue Symptoms

Common dengue symptoms include:

  • Sudden high fever

  • Headache (mainly behind the eyes)

  • Muscle ache and joint pain

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Skin rash

Most people recover within a week, but some cases can lead to serious complications such as dehydration or bleeding. If you experience persistent fever, severe pain or signs of dehydration, it’s important to seek help from a doctor promptly.

How to Prevent Dengue on Curaçao

Prevention is the most effective way to protect yourself. You can reduce your risk by:

  • Wearing long sleeves and pants, especially during the evening

  • Using mosquito repellent that contains DEET

  • Sleeping under a mosquito net

  • Removing standing water around your home or accommodation – even small puddles can attract mosquitoes

These simple steps can greatly reduce the chance of getting infected.

Dengue Vaccination on Curaçao

A dengue vaccine is now available and offers protection against severe disease. The QDENGA vaccine is given in two doses, three months apart.

At MedPoint Curaçao, you can receive your first or second dose, even if your first vaccination was done elsewhere. Vaccination is especially recommended during or before the rainy season for those who live on the island or visit the island frequently, or travel to other tropical destinations.
